Recycling Rally for Textiles, Confidential Papers, and Electronics

Recycling Rally for Textiles, Confidential Papers, and Electronics

The Northampton Department of Public Works is sponsoring a recycling event on Saturday October 15th, in cooperation with the Salvation Army, Pro-Shred and JFK Middle School PTO. The event will be held at the JFK Middle School from 9 to noon.

Free Textile Recycling: The Salvation Army will be on hand to accept old textiles that can be reused as polishing cloths, carpet padding, building materials and fibers for insulation and soundproofing. According to Bouquillon, “We are targeting materials that are unsuitable for reuse or resale by charities and thrift shops. “Bag it and Tag it” is the motto for this program because these materials should be sorted and bagged separately from quality clothing donations. Special tags will be distributed at the event that can be used on an ongoing basis for this purpose. Our goal is to reduce disposal costs for residents and to divert reusable materials from the landfill as much as possible. “

Free Paper Shredding: ProShred will be available to safely recycle papers that contain personal information. Shredding sensitive documents is an easy way guard against identity theft while benefiting the environment. A surprising array of documents contain information that should not be disposed of as trash or tossed into a recycling bin, such as canceled checks, credit card/bank statements, medical records, legal papers, and income tax files. Participants can bring up to two recycling bins of papers to be shredded at no cost.

Electronics Recycling: Anything with a plug (such as computers, televisions and appliances) will be accepted for a fee by PTO volunteers to benefit the JFK Middle School.
