What’s In it for Me?

Transcript copyright earththrives.com

Carlyn:

If I was just on the fence trying to decide whether to get a compost toilet--even if I wasn’t going to build it myself but would have someone else build it for me--what would you say to me to get off the fence and decide to do it?

Jonathan:

Well I think I would encourage you to listen to the wisdom of the people that have lived in a very sustainable--and I like to use the word elegant--a very sensible way where things fit together well.  You don’t need a lot of support system for this. You don’t need a plumber.  You don’t need an appliance and fixture or bathroom fixture store. You simplified your life, and hardly anybody I know who has gone ahead and simplified their life ever say they’re sorry they did it. So I guess my argument for it is, like, in a way, it’s one of the ways of getting yourself back to the earth in a painless way.  It’s not like there is a big sacrifice involved.

Carlyn:   In fact you’re going to save money.

Jonathan:

You’re going to save money and your going to feel better about things.  It’s almost--its what people say happens to them is more real. Does that answer your question? I don’t know, that’s the best I can do.

Carlyn:  Yea.  I mean, you’re not only saving money indefinitely on plumbing and all that but you also get all this free compost for your gardening.

Jonathan:  If you care about the state of your mind, the state of your spirit, the condition of your sense of well-being, I think that the simplifying formula works.
